Wilma Rose Crowningshield, 86, of Deerhead Road in Lewis passed away Wednesday April 20, 2022 at Meadowbrook Healthcare Facility in Plattsburgh. She was born in Lewis on January 16, 1936 daughter of the late Wilford Russell and Gertrude (Mitchell) Crowningshield.
Wilma graduated from Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School in 1952, the first class to graduate from the new school, at the age of 16, of which she was very proud. Her sister Carole was her flower girl. Wilma attended Plattsburgh Business Institute and was employed at Old Merchants National Bank in Plattsburgh until 1957. She then went to work at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company until her retirement in 1993. She was office manager for 25 years. After retirement, she was Lewis Tax Collector from 2002-2013 and part time clerk from 1998-2008. Wilma assisted her niece, Dawn Sears, with her daycare center for 8 years. Wilma cared for her great nephew, Daniel Arthur Cross, in his early childhood.
Wilma was a member of Adirondack Insurance Women’s Organization and served as president for 2 years. She was a member of Lewis Congregational Church. Wilma enjoyed traveling with friends during vacation from work. She enjoyed reading, lunches, country music and concerts, flower gardens and her family and friends; also family get-togethers at holidays and summer lobster fests.
Survivors: Brothers: Leon (Cecile) of Simi Valley, CA; Glen (Donna) of Lewis; Sisters: Betty Cross Burke of Lewis; Carole (Bill) Chadwick of Lake George ; sister-in-law Mary Ann Crowningshield of Lewis, Also several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother Russsell Crowningshield, brothers-in-law Arthur E. Cross and David Burke.
The family deeply thanks Wilma’s caregivers Starr Gay and Yvonne Ashline. Also to all the employees at Meadowbrook’s Birch Lane Unit for their wonderful care of our Wilma.
There will be no calling hours. A Graveside service will be held 10:00 AM Saturday April 23, 2022 at Deerhead Cemetery in Lewis. Donations in Wilma’s memory may be made to North Country SPCA.
