Simon "Sam" Joseph Gutierrez

Simon “Sam” Joseph Gutierrez, 90, of Stevenson Road in Westport passed away Friday July 1, 2016, at his home, surrounded by his loving family and dear friends. He was born in Nesquehoning, PA., on July 7, 1925 son of the late Jose and Grace (Mussari) Gutierrez.
Sam was raised in Witherbee, NY and graduated from Mineville High School with Honors. He won a football scholarship to Colgate University but unable to attend due to an injury working in the mines. Sam married Gaynelle Minnix Fleury on July 14, 1962 at St. Phillip Neri Church in Westport. He was a wonderful husband and “other” father to her three sons. Sam was a Diamond Drill Operator for Sprague-Henwood Drilling Company. He later worked for the Westport Post Office as a Rural Carrier for many years.
Sam is survived by his wife, Gay, of 54 years, a son Steven Fleury and his wife Diane of Westport, adopted daughter Marie Libby and her husband Richard of Manassas, Va., a sister Sandra Mazzotte and her husband Paul of Mineville, two brothers Thomas Garcia and his companion Linda of Elysburg, PA., Joseph Garcia and his wife Audrey of Albany, three granddaughters Angela Yount, Kathryn Fleury and Michelle Fleury, three great grandchildren Tyler McNealy, Dillon and Amanda Yount, a daughter in law Rachel Fleury of Manassas, VA. and several nieces and nephews. Sam is predeceased by sons John Michael Fleury and Wayne Fleury.
Calling hours will be from 3:00 to 5:00 PM Thursday July 7, 2016 at Heald Funeral Home, 7521 Court Street, Elizabethtown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Friday July 8, 2016 at St. Phillip Neri Church in Westport. Burial will follow in the parish Cemetery.
