It is with a heavy and broken heart that we announce the passing of Scott Yakey, 71, of Plattsburgh.
Scott was born November 4, 1953 the son of Scott Yakey and Eunice (Alford) Yakey. He graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh with a bachelor of arts degree in 1975. He retired with 28 years of service from NYSDOCCS in 2005. He received a letter of commendation from the superintendent for his quick actions for saving the life of a fellow officer in 1997.
Scott loved baseball and was a stand-out pitcher who threw numerous no-hitters and once struck out 19 batters in a 6-inning game in his childhood. He went on to play baseball for Post 20 and proved to be a great asset to his team.
He took up running at the age of 50 and won many medals and ribbons including a bronze medal for snowshoe running in the NYS winter games in 2007. He ran the uphill race at Whiteface which finishes at the 7.9 mile marker 3 times.
Scott was a self-taught photographer who loved his moose encounters in Maine. He never passed up the chance to be outdoors photographing the beauty of nature. His pictures always made you feel you were right there with him. A sign of a talented photographer. He was awarded the ADK Life photo contest 3 times.
One of his biggest thrills came when he had the chance to act as guardian for his Uncle Norbert Yakey during an honor flight in October of 2015. He was so proud to be able to escort his uncle around Washington, DC.
Scott is survived by his loving wife Jan; his mother Eunice and stepfather Leeward Babbie; his brothers Robert (Linda) and Daniel, nieces Heather (Amon), Ashley (Tyler), Michelle (Josh) and family Hannah and Caroline; brothers and sisters-in-law David and Cheryl Narreau and their children Scott (Taylor) Narreau, Lisa (Tim) Casey and their families, Todd Nelson (Clorisa), Steve (Katie) Nelson and their families; plus, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his father, his uncles Norbert and Richard Yakey, grandparents, and in-laws Dave and Rita Manning.
I miss you greatly, I love you so, I don't know why you had to go. My heart is broken, but it will mend one bright day when we're together again. We have lost a great man.
