Russell L. Paquette, 82, of Westport, passed away in the early hours of November 25, at Elizabethtown Community Hospital. Russell was born on February 6, 1940 in St. Albans, VT, to Eva (Richards) and John Paquette. He was the youngest of three sons, his brothers Ronald and Richard having predeceased him.
Russell graduated from Westport Central School, and joined the U.S. Army in 1959. He served on active duty, followed by the Reserves, and was honorably discharged.
Russ served his community for over 25 years through various rank-and-file and leadership positions in the Westport Fire Department and Westport Emergency Squad.
He worked for 38 years as an employee of International Paper at their Ticonderoga Mill, first in the Warehouse, and later in the Air and Water Department at the Ross Farm facility.
Russ enjoyed golfing, camping, boating on Lake Champlain, snowmobiling, and aggravating residents, Supervisors and other members of the Westport Village (and later Town) Board. He had slowed down a great deal in the last 10 years, however. Injuries from an old industrial accident in the 70s, and a serious car accident in the 90's, caught up with him and made getting around more difficult with each passing year.
Russell is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean (Carpenter), his daughter, Michelle, and his sister-in-law, Mildred Paquette, all of Westport. In addition, he is survived by many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brother-in-law and close friend, James (Bucky) Carpenter.
Calling hours will be held at the Heald Funeral Home, 7521 Court Street, Elizabethtown, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 29. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, 6603 Main Street, Westport, at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 30, followed immediately by a graveside burial.
