Mary Elizabeth (Ledwith) Bowen, 89, formerly of Essex and Willsboro, NY died peacefully in her “apartment” at Essex Centers, in Elizabethtown, NY. Born on July 14, 1928, she was the daughter of Elizabeth and James Ledwith.
She grew up in Essex, NY with her 4 siblings and she continued to build a life there, marrying Hollis Bowen in 1945. Mary and Hollis raised 4 wonderful children together - Ellen, Cathy, Lee and David.
Mary was a homemaker and she enjoyed cooking dinner for family gatherings every Saturday. She loved playing jokes on people, watching the birds, collecting rocks from different places and drinking coffee! She was so proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchild and loved them all dearly. She was full of spunk and sass right up until the end.
Mary is predeceased by her husband Hollis, her parents, and her siblings - Catherine, Arthur, Donald and Leo.
She is survived by her children, Ellen (David) Cronk, Cathy (John) Alden, Lee (Jane) Bowen and David Bowen (Shelly Tate). Nine grandchildren, Michael (Sara) Cronk, Laura Cronk, Sarah (Neil) Cronk-Duquette, Jennifer (LT) Gilbreath, Lauren Bowen, Ashley (fiancé Joe Murphy) Alden and Christopher, Matthew and Kimberly Bowen, 1 great grandchild Ian Cronk, several nieces and nephews, her sister-in-law, Roseanne Bowen and her brother-in-law, Donald (Sandy) Bowen.
Mary spent her last 3 and a half years at Essex Centers in Elizabethtown, NY where she made many friends. Her favorite pastime was picking on all of the staff, but most of all she loved spending time with her special friend Dylan "Billy" Mero. She made many memories with countless staff members over the years who would always take time out of their busy day to stop in and say hello. Her family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of her “family” at Essex Centers who contributed to her happiness and well-being while she was there.
Mary’s funeral service and burial will be held at the family's convenience. Mary loved animals so the family would like donations in her memory to be made to the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge and Rehab Center, 977 Springfield Rd., Wilmington, NY 12997.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Heald Funeral Home, 7521 Court Street, Elizabethtown.
