Leona F. “Peggy” Cross, 91, of Route 9 in Lewis passed away with her family by her side, Saturday December 23, 2017 at Elizabethtown Community Hospital in Elizabethtown. She was born in Keeseville July 4, 1926 daughter of the late Fred and Lena (Blaise) Poland.
Peggy married Thomas Cross May 15, 1946. She worked for Essex county Cooperative extension as a Nutrition Aide, Cafeteria Aide at ELCS, Activities Aide at Horace Nye Nursing Home and may be best known as a Server at Tommy Browns Restaurant in Lewis for many years. She attended St. Elizabeth’s Church, Very active with the American Legion Auxiliary, an avid bowler and enjoyed playing BINGO. Peggy was a very strong woman raising her seven children alone after the death of her husband in 1966.
Peggy is survived by seven children; Edith Rand (Milo), of Lewis, Edward Cross of Elizabethtown, Cindy Heald (David) of Elizabethtown, Carmen Cross (Wendy) of N.C., Vesta Bill (Jay) of Elizabethtown, Thomas Cross (Vanessa) of Lewis, Tammy Cross (Marshall) of New Russia, four siblings; Roy Poland, Roger Poland, Jane McNierney, Mary Hathaway, eleven grandchildren, twenty two great grandchildren, ten great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by two brothers; Robert and Raymond Poland.
Calling hours will be 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM Wednesday December 27, 2017 at Heald Funeral Home, 7521 Court Street, Elizabethtown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Thursday December 28, 2017 at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Elizabethtown. Burial will follow in the Lewis cemetery.
