Lawrence “Larry” M. Bliss of Essex, N.Y., still very young at heart and active, died at the age of 95 Friday, May 22, 2015, at the UVM Medical Center following a short illness.
Larry was born October 8, 1919, the son of the late John A. and Adeline (Winch) Bliss.
He recently celebrated 70 years of marriage with his wife, Dorothy (DeZalia). Together, they were blessed with two children, Lawrence D. Bliss (who predeceased him in 2011 after succumbing to ALS) and Sheila A. Borden.
His son Lawrence married Polly (Pierce) and gave them three granddaughters and four great-grandchildren: Laura Bliss and partner Michael Carson (Alex, Michael and Benjamin); Sarah Bliss and partner Jamie Hammaker; and Melanie Bliss-Hall and husband David Hall (Olivia).
Sheila is married to Irwin C. Borden, Jr., and presented her parents with a grandson, Keith L. Lobdell, who married Jill Edde Lobdell and gave them three great-grandchildren (Malynda, Lawrence Blake and Ella).
Larry was also predeceased by his sisters, Marjory Howe and Gertrude Eckert. He is also survived by his sister, Lenna Ranney; two sisters-in-law: Frances Provoncha and Irena Stebbins; and two brothers-in-law: Norman (Judith) DeZalia and Horace (Lucille) DeZalia; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
It was said by someone (author unknown), “The measure of a man in is the lives he touched,” and Larry touched too many to number. He enjoyed joking with others, no matter what their age. He was an avid hunter and fondly remembered his years working on the South Farm in Essex. He loved his children and grandchildren, but the smiles and love shown to him by the great-grandchildren put the light into his days.
The family is extremely thankful for the time they were able to enjoy with him and the precious memories created.
Calling Hours will be held Saturday, May 30, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Marvin-Heald Funeral Home in Elizabethtown, followed by burial at the Lewis Cemetery, with a reception to follow at the Lewis Volunteer Fire Department. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be sent to the ALS Raising Hope Foundation, P.O. Box 2094,Plattsburgh, NY 12901; or the Essex Volunteer Fire Department.
