Joseph Rudolph Matott, 93, of the O'Neil Rd, West Chazy, passed away Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at the CVPH Medical Center.
He was born at home in Champlain, NY on June 27, 1930, the son of Harvey and Helen Matott.
Joseph married Shirley Bordeau on August 9, 1952 at St. Peter's Church in Plattsburgh.
The couple resided in Fort Bragg, NC during Joseph's service in the US Army before returning to upstate NY. Joseph worked 30 years for the NYS Corrections Department before retiring. He was a parishioner of St. Joseph's Church in West Chazy.
Joseph enjoyed spending time with his family. Each morning he went to breakfast with his wife, son, and daughter-in-law, enjoying a strong cup of coffee and witty conversation. Every summer he would give his grandchildren rides in his tractor and every winter he would create an ice rink on his front lawn for them to skate. He was a talented wood worker as well and built his grandchildren a playhouse, which still stands at his house for his great grandchildren to enjoy. He also greatly enjoyed motorcycles, cars, and bikes and would spend hours tinkering in his garage.
Survivors include his daughter, Sally Rock of Plattsburgh; daughter-in-law, JoAnne Matott of West Chazy; four grandchildren, Sara Young and husband David of Niskayuna, Valarie Matott and her companion Matthew Rabideau of Plattsburgh, Elizabeth Garrand and husband Jason of Plattsburgh, and Matthew Rock of Watertown; six great-grandchildren, Chloe and Nora Young and Hunter, Hayden, Hudson and Holden Garrand; and sister Shirley Brothers of Plattsburgh.
He is predeceased by his wife, Shirley Matott; son, Steven Matott; parents, Harvey and Helen Matott; brothers, Marcel, Charlie and Henry; and sister Lillian.
Donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, September 25, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Peter's Cemetery in Plattsburgh, NY.
Arrangements have been entrusted into the care of Heidrick Funeral Home (formerly Heald Funeral Home) in Plattsburgh.
