Janice Hutchins

November 8, 1935 — March 3, 2024

Janice Hutchins passed away peacefully at home on March 3, 2024 surrounded by her family. She was born Janice King on November 8, 1935 in Willsboro, NY. The daughter of Mark and Margaret (Marceaux) King, Jan was the second of eight children. When she married Conrad Hutchins in 1956 they wasted no time starting their own family of eight children.

Jan was an expert homemaker. The house was always (mostly) spotless, and she could whip up a holiday dinner for 20 in what seemed like no time at all. She was a financial whiz - there was limited funds but she fed a large family, paid all the bills and managed to put money away for later. She maintained a vegetable garden to can and freeze food for the winter. She also took her children to pick berries to freeze and made her own wine. Jan was a talented seamstress. She made pillows, quilts and clothes for her children which included prom dresses.

After her youngest child was born Jan went to work outside the home. She had jobs at Denton Publications and the Essex County Board of Elections. She started a busy catering business with her sister Charlotte and later had her own Ebay business, selling collectibles online after teaching herself to use the computer.

Jan was a longtime parishioner of St. Elizabeth's Church. Not only did she faithfully attend weekly services, she cleaned the altar, sang in the choir and volunteered at the thrift shop.

No matter how busy she was, Jan would always make time to have fun by having a beer (or two) with friends or family members. She was also not above getting involved in a prank or two. She was a ringleader in the Halloween Cemetery prank on the grounds of the Essex County buildings many years ago!

Jan is survived by her children Sharyn (David Martin) Hutchins, Suzie Hutchins, Sandra (David) Primrose, Steve Hutchins, Scott (Sarah) Hutchins, Stuart (Aran) Hutchins, Sara Hutchins, her sister Charlotte Burt and brothers Gary (Beverly) King and Daniel (Bonnie) King, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her pet kitties Timmy and Sprinkles, who provided endless entertainment for Jan. She was predeceased by her husband Conrad Hutchins and daughter Stacey, her parents Mark and Margaret King, and brothers Wayne, James, Warren and Michael.

The Hutchins family would like to thank the amazing nurses from High Peaks Hospice, especially Morgan, Lauren and Robin, and CNA Marlene LaRose for the professional and loving care they gave our Jan. They were truly lifesavers.

Jan went through life that was sometimes very hard with a sense of humor and compassion for others that made it seem like a breeze. She maintained her unbelievable humor and strength until the end of her battle with Alzheimer's. She will be terribly missed by everyone who was blessed to know her.

We'll see you later, Jan. You're in charge!
