ELIZABETHTOWN - Janet M. Norton, 79, of Elizabethtown, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, with her two "Favorite" sons by her side, at the Essex Centers in Elizabethtown, N.Y.
She was born in Elizabethtown on May 22, 1935, to the late Jesse and Sarah (Lennon) Denton.
Janet graduated from Elizabethtown-Lewis High School in 1954. She lived in the Adirondacks most of her life with the exception of a few years in Oneonta, N.Y. Janet worked for Dr. Noel Merrihew Dental office for many years. She was also employed at the Essex County Clerk's office. Janet's dream was to be a Police Woman which she fulfilled in 1974 when she became the first female Deputy Sheriff in the North Country, which her family was very proud of.
She enjoyed sports, especially watching her two sons participate in many school sporting events, in which on occasion found herself on the field of play. Janet enjoyed spending time with many family and friends in the area. She enjoyed going for rides in the car, eating lunch with her husband, sons and grandson. Janet could often be found at the "Hole in the Wall" in the afternoon enjoying life.
Janet is survived by her husband, Richard "Hoot" Norton, her best friend who she has been happily married to for 24 years; two sons, Thomas Tyler and his companion, Angel of North Hudson, Ike Tyler and his wife Laura of Westport; one stepson Alan Norton and his wife, Lisa of Denver, Colo., one step daughter, Rhonda Mankin and her husband, Mike of New Mexico; six grandchildren, Michael Tyler, Mallory Tyler, Kyle and Austin Norton, Rachelle and Brandi Gough; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Agnes Denton.
Janet is predeceased by siblings, Patricia Jackson, Norma Mowery, Sylvia Holmes, Muriel Denton, June Rauch, Nancy Platero, Beverly Denton and Jesse Denton Jr.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, at the Marvin-Heald Funeral Home, 7521 Court Street, Elizabethtown, N.Y. A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
