James Patrick Dawson

James Patrick Dawson was born April 4, 1945, in Ticonderoga, New York. He was the youngest son of Frank Dawson and Clara (Ruddy) Dawson. He graduated from Moriah Central School, Moriah, New York in 1963. He attended St. Michael’s College in Burlington, Vermont and Albany Law School, Albany, New York. While at St. Michaels’ Jim was a member of ROTC and following his graduation from Albany Law School he spent four years, serving as a JAG officer in the US Army. After an honorable discharge, Jim returned to Essex County, where he practiced law for 16 years, serving as Town Attorney and County Attorney. In 1991, Jim was elected as Essex County Judge and in 1993, was elected to the Supreme Court, serving 14 years as a Supreme Court Judge in the 4th Judicial District. Jim retired from the bench in 2008. Judge Dawson received many professional accolades including the New York State Trial Lawyers Capital District Affiliate Award for Judicial Excellence in 2008. After retirement Jim enjoyed projects at home, provided consultation for Dawson & Associates and was a regular attendee of St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church and sober support groups.
Jim is survived by his wife Nancy Holm Dawson of 49 years, daughters and son in laws, Elizabeth and Billy Trombley of Irvine, California and Alexandra and Anthony Moore of Albany, New York; two grandchildren Quinn and Hudson Moore; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Janice Dawson of Champlain, New York; and many nieces and nephews.
Judge Dawson was loved and respected by his family, friends and community.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, Elizabethtown, New York. A private family mass will be held at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, Elizabethtown, New York at the convenience of the family.
