Elizabeth June Auer

August 4, 1924 — September 25, 2022

Elizabeth June Auer, age 98, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 25, 2022 at Elderwood of Uihlein at Lake Placid. She was born on August 4, 1924, the daughter of the late Harrison Hayes and Catherine (O’Keefe) Hayes. On July 1, 1944, she was united in marriage to Eugene Auer at Immaculate Conception, Rochester NY.
For 18 years, Elizabeth June and Eugene owned and operated the historic Spread Eagle Inn in Keene Valley, NY now known as the AuSable Inn. Over the many years of welcoming locals and travelers alike into their establishment many memories were made. June brought her passion for cooking and fine-tuned her craft which she later shared with her family nightly, at 6pm sharp, at her dinner table.
In Elizabeth June’s younger years, she came to be known simply, as June. Among her many interests, June was a Cub Scout Den Mother for several years in Rochester, NY. She was a devout catholic with a strong Irish heritage. She enjoyed the time she spent teaching catechism and attending mass at St. Brendan’s Catholic church in her hometown of Keene, NY. June had a fondness for music, but most notably she enjoyed the likes of John McCormack and Bing Crosby. Her favorite holiday was Christmas and June loved displaying her decorations that brought back fond memories of Auntie and Granny. She also enjoyed down time at home reading books, but nothing could compare to her love of family. She also enjoyed talking to her special niece daily on the phone. To put it simply, June was a strong-minded woman with resolute dedication to her family.
June was preceded in death by her parents Harrison and Catherine (O’Keefe) Hayes; beloved husband Eugene Auer; brothers William Hayes, Henry Hayes, and sister Mary (Hayes) Derrenbacher; granddaughter Heather Elaine Auer, brother-in-law Edward Bollin and grandson-in-law Scott Scovell.
She is survived by her four sons Eugene Auer, Jr. and wife Joan (Dalle) Auer of Churchville, NY; Daniel Auer of Keene, NY; Henry Auer of Keene Valley, NY; Harrison Auer and wife Holly (Slater) Auer of Keene, NY; and sister-in-law Eleanor (Auer) Bollin of Rochester, NY. June is also survived by her grandchildren Chris Auer; Eric Auer and wife Sandy Auer; Daniel Auer Jr. and wife Lauri Auer; Scott Auer; Sean Auer; and Penny (Auer) Whitney; Paul Auer; Melanie (Auer) Porter and husband Matthew Porter; Elaine (Auer) Doyle and husband Steven Doyle; and Vanessa (Auer) Scovell in addition to numerous great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, as well as several special nieces and nephews.
