David Downs

BLUFFTON, SC--David A. Downs, 83, formerly of Elizabethtown, NY, died October 23, 2024 in Bluffton, SC where he resided with his wife of 57 years, Mary Downs. He was the eldest son of Marion (Sheehy) and Emmett Downs, born in Plattsburgh, NY on June 23, 1941. He is survived by Mary Downs, whom he married on February 4, 1967, and his five children, Greg Downs, Kim Andrews, Kerry Downs, Colleen Downs, and Marc Downs, daughter-in-law Susan (Akey) Downs, and grandchildren Owen Andrews, Ryan Andrews, Aiden Downs, Jakob Downs, and Jasmine Downs, as well as his brother, Paul Downs of Plattsburgh, NY.

David graduated from St. John's School in Plattsburgh, NY in 1959. He went on to obtain his Bachelor's in Philosophy from St. Bonaventure University in 1963. Upon graduation, David returned to his hometown to teach at St. Peters School, before transitioning to teaching English at Moriah Central School for 34 years. After retirement from teaching, David worked as a job coach at Mountain Lake Services in Port Henry, NY.

David is remembered by his family as a devoted husband and father. His favorite activities were running, reading history and the New York Times, and taking Sunday drives with Mary to view the scenery and have an ice cream. He enjoyed walking through Elizabethtown to the post office or to Stewart's, often with one of his children by his side. For many years he volunteered at the Elizabethtown Library.

A private memorial service was held at Saul's Funeral Home in Bluffton, SC on November 1, 2024. Donations in David's memory may be made to Toys for Tots.
