SARANAC – David A. Collins, age 74, of Saranac, NY, passed away on Monday, May 15, 2017, at UVM Health Network, CVPH, with his loving family by his side, after a long and courageous battle with cancer and renal failure.
David was born in Plattsburgh and raised in Redford, New York, by his parents, the late Arthur and Margaret (Baker) Collins. At the age of 22, he entered the United States Army and served from August 24, 1964 to August 11, 1966. He loved his country and was proud of his military service and showed his appreciation to others who served by being an active member of the Saranac American Legion Post 1618 Honor Guard until his health would no longer permit it. Now it is his turn to be honored.
In 2003, David retired from the New York State Department of Correctional Services where he worked as a civilian truck driver and general mechanic. Prior to entering State Service, he worked construction many years for Ahern Sheet Metal and various contractors. He was always proud of the fact that he was able to maintain employment and collected only one unemployment check in his lifetime.
David is survived by his wife of 22 years, Donna (Atkinson) Collins, and her children Christopher Moulton and his wife Treza, Glen Moulton, and James (Buckshot) and his wife Jessie all of Saranac. His brother, Michael Collins and his wife Kathy of Clayburg and his sister, Linda Sandefur and her husband, James of Zebulon, Georgia also survive him as well as his four grandchildren, Chad Moulton, MacKenzie Siskavich, Trina Moulton, and Stephanie Moulton. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. His parents, Arthur and Margaret Baker Collins predeceased him as well as a step daughter, Trina Moulton Siskavich, a nephew, Chad Collins, and a niece, Cassie Collins.
A grave side service will be held on Friday, May 19, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the Saranac Independence Cemetery, which will be followed by luncheon provided by his fellow legionnaires at the Saranac American Legion Post 1618.
