Bernard P. Peryea, (Pat), 95, of 25 Gregory Street, Dannemora, New York, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at home surrounded by his family.
He was born in Altona, N. Y. on January 19, 1920, the son of the late John and Anna (Miller) Peryea. Bernard attended school in Altona. He married the love of his life, Hortense Patnode, November 27, 1941 (predeceased December 7, 2005). Shortly after their marriage, WWII started, and he was drafted into the U.S. Army on June 3rd, 1942.
After completion of his basic trainng, he was assigned to coastal defense in California. After a brief time there, he was ordered to go overseas. He served in France, Germany, Italy and Belgium. WWII ended and Bernard was discharged on December 31, 1945.
Bernard worked for Imperial a few years before going to N.Y.S. Department of Corrections in food service of which he retired as a food service manager with 33 years of service. Bernard was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion Post #852, Dannemora, New York. Bernard was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great-great grandfather. He always had a smile and a quick wit. His hobbies were fishing, gardening, reading the daily news and above all else cooking. He had the love of food and feeding others.
Survivors include his daughters, Patricia (Patti) Couture and her husband, Clement; Elaine Miller and her husband, Howard and Phyllis Peryea. Grandchildren: Ann Marie (Peter) Petrashune, Stephen Couture, Laurie Jean Couture and her companion, Michael Holmes; Michael Miller and his companion, Michelle Donah , Mark (Jessica) Miller, Jason (Beth) Miller; Suzette Couture-Inman, Adam Couture, Christi (Cooper) Dixon, and Ralph (Kelly) Cooper. Twenty-nine great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.
Siblings; one sister, Christine (Kit) Shepard of Richmond, British Columbia, Brothers, Leo Peryea of North Tonawanda and Norm (Claire) Peryea of Port St. Lucie, Florida and several nieces and nephews.
Bernard was predeceased by parents, two brothers, John and Walter (in infancy). Seven sisters; Anna King, Emma King, Velma King, Thelma Irwin, Leona Dobbs, Hortense Ashline and Muriel Larsen.
At Bernard’s request there will be no calling hours. Saturday, March 28th, 2015 viewing hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, Dannemora with Mass of Christian burial to follow at 11:00 am. Interment will be at a later date in the parish cemetery.
