Augustine Eclipse Giroux, 90 years old, a life-long resident of Plattsburgh, NY passed away peacefully on February 9, 2023 with her family by her side. She was born on August 31, 1932, the daughter of Leo and Ruth (Gebo) Baker. She was born during the full eclipse, which gave her, her name.
She grew up and attended school in Plattsburgh, where she was better known by her nicknames Tuckie or Tracy to her family and friends. She married the love of her life James Walter Giroux Sr at St. Peter’s Church on February 3, 1951. They were blessed with three beautiful children: Jolene Giroux, James (Jamie) Giroux Jr., and Jina Baker.
The most important things in Tracy’s life were her family and her faith. She was a jack of all trades as a mom, and then as a skilled owner of apartment houses. In her love for God and her Country, Tracy was a devout Catholic. She was involved at St. Peter’s church in prayer services, a member of the choir, and supplied many hundreds of rosaries for all in the faith community. She took great pride in caring for the Benjamin Mooers home (this home was the American Headquarters during the 1812 Battle of Plattsburgh).
Tracy was not only a devoted mom to her own children, she also became a mom to some of her children’s closest friends. Peter Momot and his wife Devi, Cindy Verville and her husband Michael, and Michelle Anderton and her husband Gary, all have amazing memories of their time spent with Tracy. Some of these memories include gathering up as many children that she could fit in the family station wagon, and bringing them on a trip to the beach or camping in the family camper.
As her family grew, Tracy earned another nickname, Grammy. Grammy’s home was always open, her table was always surrounded in love and laughter, by both her family and her friends. She developed a life-long bond with her former neighbors and close friends John and Juanita Serenko. Besides her grandchildren, she was also known as Grammy to Lisa, Neal, Maria, and Noah Longe, Rachael Leach, and Alyssa and Ashton Momot.
She was predeceased by her husband of 30 years, James Walter Giroux Sr, her parents Leo and Ruth, her brothers John and wife Geraldine, Frank and his wife Rita, Alva, Alphadge, Joseph, Robert, and Arthur. She is also predeceased by one sister Gertrude Devins and her husband Howard. She was also predeceased by her brothers-in-law Ronnie Gilman, Alfred Giroux and wife Elenore, Herbert Geroux and wife Doris, Robert Giroux, and Donald Giroux and wife Dorothy; as well as sisters-in-law Doris Richards and Bernice McTiernan and husband Sonny.
Left to cherish Tracy’s memory are her beloved children Jolene Giroux, Jamie and wife Beth Giroux, and Jina and husband Arthur Baker. Her grandchildren Jessica Mero and husband Joe, Jasmine Wallace and husband Joel, Jason Giroux and wife Danielle, Shirley Lawler, Steven Dubrey and wife Katie, Adam Meixler and girlfriend Eveline Case, Eric Meixler, Nicole Meixler, Arianna Meixler, Jeremy Baker and wife Ruth. Her great-grandchildren Mitchel Mero and girlfriend Cheyanne Ricard, Christopher Mero, Piper Dubrey, Kalli Dubrey, Ernie Dubrey, Kellan Wallace, Kathleen Wallace, Liam Lawler, Connor Lawler, Jack Lawler, Levi Baker, Landon Baker, Wyatt Giroux, and baby girl Giroux. She is also survived by her sisters; Joan Woodring and husband Harold, Betty Reynolds, also sisters-in-law; Jean Baker, Rose Baker, Sandy Giroux, Barbara Gilman, Linda House, Helen Davidson-Either, and Judy Allen and husband Mike. With such a large family, she had 79 nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Meadowbrook Nursing Home for their wonderful care of Grammy Giroux for the last eight years.
