LEWIS – Atwood F. Pierce, 84, passed away August 19, 2020 at the Champlain Valley Senior Community in Willsboro, NY after a long, courageous and hard-fought battle with cancer.
He was born on Nov 27, 1935, the son of Floyd and Adelaide (Hathaway) Pierce in Whallonsburg, NY.
He enlisted in the United States Army in 1953, served during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1956. He returned to his home and married the love of his life, Carrie M. Dickerson on May 10, 1957. “Woody” raised a family and became known as “Coach” to many of the local youth. He worked & retired from the New York State Dept of Transportation. He was a member of the Lewis American Legion Post 1319 (for 41 years) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. He was a loyal Ford customer and a devoted Boston Red Sox fan.
In 2017 he received orders to report back to active duty and was privileged to be a part of the North Country Honor Flight #22 honoring veterans from all branches of the US Military.
He leaves behind his children, Laurie (William) Mero of Willsboro NY, Joseph (Renee) Pierce of Bellevue, NE and son-in-law Timothy Lee of Willsboro, NY; grandchildren, Celeste (Steve) Fox of Orleans, MA, Dylan Mero of Willsboro, NY, Jolene Pierce of Troy, NY, and Claire Mero of Willsboro, NY, 3 great grandchildren (Mason, Larkin & Alaina Fox of Orleans, MA); brothers, Bruce, Floyd & Steve; sisters, Barbara (Nate) Gough, Doris (Bernard) Colburn, Beverly (Leamon) Moran, Debra (Pete) Heald, Faylene (Harold) Montville, Vesta (Robert) Spring; several nieces and nephews and his Egglefield Ford Family.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Carrie of 63 years, his daughter Lynn (Lee) of Willsboro, NY; his sisters, Alice, Faye & Sheila; several dear brother-in-laws & sister-in-laws to numerous to list and his beloved chocolate lab, Mollee.
There are no calling hours. Burial with memorial services are being planned for May 2021.
Atwood will rest next to her loving daughter Lynn in the Reber Cemetery in Willsboro, NY.
