Anna "Ann" Szalkowski, age 88, died at Meadowbrook Health Care in Plattsburgh, New York, on Saturday, July 25, 2015. The cause was chronic pulmonary disease.
Born July 2, 1927, in Brooklyn, New York, to Madeline and Joseph Luttenburger, she attended New York’s PS 145 in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. Soon thereafter Ann started her career as a switchboard operator at the New York Telephone Company (now Verizon) on Pearl Street in New York City. It was there that she met the love of her life Edward Szalkowski. They married soon thereafter in February of 1945.
Ann was very active in her church and community and gave much of her time to volunteering. Her volunteer work includes undertaking a year long mission at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah where she dedicated herself to assisting visitors to the Church’s world renowned genealogy center. Ann also served as caretaker of the Plattsburgh Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and generously gave time to Plattsburgh’s Joint Council of Economic Opportunity where she was a Senior Outreach Volunteer and to Birthright International.
Over the years Ann was owner of several businesses including Pair of Aces Luncheonette in Deer Park, New York and Little Treasures Jewelry in Plattsburgh, New York.
Ann will be especially remembered for her strong faith, love for family, entrepreneurial spirit, and the tenaciousness that drove her to pursue many diverse endeavors throughout her life.
Ann is survived by her loving children Deborah Graves (husband David), Guy Szalkowski (wife Jill), Peter Szalkowski (wife Gina), Ed Szalkowski (wife Jenny) and grandchildren, Amy Graves, Melissa King, Jessica Judd, Jamie Dupell, Jennifer, Guy, Alex, Lee , Arielle and Megan Szalkowski and great-grandchildren Ethan and Ashley King, Dustin and Quinn Judd and Brianna and Zach Center.
Ann is also survived by her brother Bill Luttenburger. Anna was preceded in death by her husband Edward, eldest son Bruce and her siblings, Marie, George, Joe and Tony.
Services will be held on Thursday, July 30th at 10:00 a.m. at The Mormon Church located at 22 Dennis Avenue, Plattsburgh, New York.
